dan@dantheonemanband.com,
Email marketing is Powerful and WORKS!!!
I really don't think it does. I delete all my crap emails just by looking at the subject line. If you can't write something that has personal interest to me in the subject line, I won't read it.
Spam away, if someone actually reads your email, I'd be amazed.
You can buy a list of like a million addresses pretty cheaply if you're going to do that.

I guess the questions to ask are this:
how much hate mail did you receive?
How many sales did you make?
Did the amount of sales justify the amount of hate mail?
The other question is "what is spam?" My answer would be unsolicited emails to a large and random group of people.
A public radio station's mailing list, in my opinion, is a large group of people who are potentially interested in the service you provide. Therefore, this is not spam, but advertising to a target consumer group.
best to you,

I'm a magician, so the first thing I'd try to do is make it look like it's not spam. If it doesn't look like spam, then they won't think it's spam.
Try to make it look like you've added a personal touch, as if your not using a bulk mail program and actually wrote the email. You'd want the subject line to be VERY relevant to your audience. Throw in an intentional misspelling or misclick here and there just to make it look like a legit mail. Consider adding your phone number for them to call you, no spammer will ever put contact info in a spam.
But the biggest thing I can suggest is to make it a one-time deal. Email them, and forget about it. If you get a reply, then add them to your list - it's no longer spam if they are requesting mroe info. If you start emailing them once a week, then they might get ticked off about it and not hire you.
Now if it's not a lot email addresses, but a short list, try this out ... goto google and search for their email. Did they make a post somewhere? Mention that in the email as where you found it. Since these are highly targeted email addresses, it can be worth the extra effort to make it as personal as possiable. If it's an AOL or Yahoo email or something, see if they have a profile - you might find out that they are welcoming emails from you!Comment
