Here we go. My first attempt at promo pics. Three rolls of film and I got six pics I kind of like. I scaned them into two jpg files which are huge, sorry. The scans aren't real great quality, I don't know why they suck so much, and scaning them was a big pain in the ass. I can't wait until I can afford a mac.

if you have any feedback. I'm getting another hair cut tomorrow, and we are gonna shoot another roll or two next week. I'm also gonna have a couple other photographers do a shoot.

              Hi Evan,

It's good to see the efforts you are putting into this. I remember my first promo photos and they were a lot like yours. My sister shot them in a school playground and for half of them I was standing in front of a brick wall. I think I've learned a few things since then (the hard way, of course), so here are some pointers:

              - great to see you wearing a costume that is brand new and that you are holding new props. It makes a BIG difference in photos. You look sharp and professional. Now fix the SHOES.

              - brick wall for background is okay for standup comedy or "ghetto fabulous." but you look out of place. Well, your shoes belong there, anyway.

For the three photos on "evanset1":

              - 1st photo from left:
notice that your right elbow is cut off. This ruins the photo. I think this pose should be full body.
The light on your face goes from shadow to DIRECT sunlight. Not good.

              - center photo:
The tips of the clubs are cut off. Ruins the photo. same problem with lighting

              -photo on right:
              ghetto fabulous.

For the three photos in evanset2

              top:
              lighting is bad

              middle:
What are going to do-- pound someone?!!?!!

              bottom:
top of head cut off, arm cut off and what are those blue and white knobby things?

              ------------------------------------
              some suggestions:
look at promo photos of other performers-- but NOT NECESSARILY OTHER JUGGLERS!!! I get my inspiration from british pop bands. Look at magazine ads, look at tv commercials, etc.

It's difficult to get good photos when they are taken by students, your friends, family and even certain photographers that claim to be "entertainment photographers." You have to tell them EXACTLY what you want. They almost never have any ideas, and the ideas they do have are usually borrowed from the last juggler that they photographed. Think long and hard about what you want and make sure you tell them this clearly. I usually have sketches.

You know how when you get a haircut you show the barber a picture-- it's the same really.

Someone recommended to me to use the photographer in the mall for my first promo photos. I didn't do this-- instead I spent $600 on a guy who said he was an entertainment photographer and out of the 8 rolls of film, only 2 photos were decent.

I think the mall photographer idea may have some merit if you have clear ideas and can tell them what to do.

I applaud your efforts and hope to see some GREAT pics of you soon.

I can't see any pictures on the site. Is it just me? Tried with Explorer and Netscape and all I get is a logo in the top corner.

it's not just you brian, angelfire blocked it between last night and now. I'll have to change it.
Ok, I'm trying to publish my web page on the server I subscribed to (ipowerweb.com) using front page and it's confusing the hell out of me.
my domain in globalevan.com. the pics are there somewhere, I'll figure out how to see them later tonight, right now I have a bunch of other stuff to do. Check back later.

Thanks for the great feedback Etienne. About the shoe thing; I actually have some brand new sambas, but I forgot to wear them, stupid huh.

                    Evan,
I can help you with everything if you're planning on coming back to LA.

To learn about photography, try not using any flash. If you can borrow a digital camera and take pictures without the flash. Use the lights that you have around the house, or sunlight and some aluminum foil. If you take pics with a flash directly by the camera as the main source of light, it flattens out the subject "your face" and makes it look cheap.

If you want the pics to look cute, pute a light slightly behind and overhead, then, another infront overhead, and one more (or a lot more infront to reflect off your eyes). Washing out your face with bright lights and putting a glow on your hair is the best way to take away any imperfections (see any no doubt video -- Gwen Steffani isn't that hot in person.)

For your website, cut and paste from other websites.

For a quote of the day, don't put "I can eat 50 eggs" no one cares and it doesn't make sense.

You don't need a quote of the day.

Photos should be cropped so that they look good. Get paint shop pro from jasc.com(I think). It's kinda simple and it might still be free for a trial.

                    Your current thumbnails look bad.

Your final photos are too big.

Some of your photos are sideways.

When you get your photos developed, have them put them on cds for you. Tell them that you would like them in 600 dpi. You'll have to go to a nicer (wolf camera) developing place.

thanks scot. My friend jim has done most of the work on the webpage so far. I have photoshop, I'll use that to crop future pics, but I'm not trying to use the site to promote myself yet.
I'm going back to LA after motionfest.

I had to move the pics again.

I'll have new pics to laugh at soon.
My friend Alex told me not to have the background so close; makes sence.

the other pics on the site are just to fill space until I get the site going for real. The whole site is kind of in beta testing form, it's just published up there to keep me motivated and teach me how to manage it.

                      You guys rock!

good friend helped me take some new pics yesterday. He gave me some tips for photoshop too and I have been working on that to make them look more professional.

here is the first pic I think I'm completed with. These pics are for my web page only.

yo evan, in that pic i like the colors, the backgroudn works well with the clubs and the shirt, but what sorta look are you goin for there? Im pretty sure its not casual... Maybe thats just what i get from the bowtie. The look might work if you're leaning on something like a doorway, but otherwise i dunno man.

                            evan,
Crop it down so that the clubs are about a quarter inch from the top. Your face looks red. For display on the web, you don't need a pic that big. If yo make it 350 pixels wide, that's fine. People will look at more than one photo and they just want to see what you look like. They don't need to see every nose hair.

The content will be fine as long as you display it with other photos.

that pic vesion 2, coulour balance is hard for me.

The look I'm going for? I'm trying to "look" like me. I am trying to sell myself more than I am a show at the moment, so I just want to look interesting. The red bow tie with feathers was made specificly for me by a desighner friend of mine and I think it's cute. It has nothing to do with being casual or formal, it's just interesting. It will prolly be much better next to all the other pics in editing process right now. Does that make any sence?

                              Thanks--Evan
