    juggling hat, for good cause

hello! does anyone have one of those "derby" hats, round black wool ones, to either sell or donate to a good cause? I have been part of a team teaching ex-addicts circus skills and it has been amazing. One of them is very keen to continue learning hat stuff but i can't afford to buy him one...any help would be massively appreciated.....
    love

It probably won't help you out for one person, but for what it's worth, I have a couple of pages on my site showing how I construct my bowler hats. Check out:

There is some overhead to building the blocks, but once they're ready, you can produce as many hats as you wish for next to nothing.

There are LOADS of derbies in charity shops all around the UK. Usually what happens is some old geezer dies and his wife sends everything to oxfam... you can get a nice one for under 10 quid if you look around a bit.

There is a derby that is by Nils Pol which is specially weighted for hat tricks-- it is basically one hat sewn inside another.

It's really expensive and looks like a "special jugglers hat" which kind of defeats the purpose of hat tricks (extraordinary manipulations of an everyday object)

I have known Jugglers who weight their hats often put something around the brim, but it is not at all necessary.

Take the hats, Em, but if our man offers you a ride to Canada, think twice.

I'm just an American and all I want to do is go visit some friends for a weekend. Easy ? I ask you.

That deserves its own topic, "strange customs-bordering on insanity"
Go on, give us the extended version.

                      Martin,

Karl will do the story justice. Ask him the next time you stop by.

Em, You can add weight and balance to an ordinary Bowler or other hat, to make it much better for tricks, by getting an appropriate length of half inch rope, spraying it the right colour and hot-glueing it inside the outer edge of the brim, on top. The audience will never notice it and the extra weight gives amazing control, esp. outdoors in wind. You really should get used to doing it to hats if you're teaching people hat tricks. It will behave more like a reliable but lopsided quoit than a light-weight unbalanced hat.

Cheers petal, god i have learnt more about the simple quietness of the hat world than anything this week...i wasn't actually teaching it but happened to be the one who he persuaded to help him get one...i just wear them but i am developing a creeping interest in the fancy stuff maybe i'll have to keep it and tell him i couldn't get one...hahhahah...no i wouldn't do that...
I am bundling 15 of them into my truck tomorrow to take 'em to see 'circus of horrors', not the best choice what with all those needles and things being stuck into peoples bodies but they'll have a laugh...

Rob, what was all the middle bit of this post about? kind of went cryptic, did you want to come over for tea and biscuits??
