Help ! Who is that Guy ?

    Hi Folks

I wonder if there’s anybody who can help me with an unusual query.

Having recently watched the Hollywood film ‘ Subway Stories ’ I was entranced by one particular subway musician and the tune he played.

The ‘ Subway Stories ’ film was composed of 10 short stories. The one in which the busker played was titled ‘ Honey-getter ’

The busker was apparently a man called Gi Shen.
He plays Anitras Tanz by Grieg. It’s hauntingly beautiful.
The instrument he uses is concealed by his hand. It was something a little larger than his hand ( a mouth organ ? ) He held it to his mouth. It was attached to a tube or cable which ran to a box shaped amplifier at his feet.

I’ve invested a lot of time and effort in trying to trace any recordings by this musician but without success. I can’t even establish what type of instrument he uses.

    My query :

Can anybody tell me where I can buy this tune as performed on that particular instrument by either Gi Shen or any other musician ?

Also, does anybody know what the instrument might be ?

    Hope that’s not too muddled.

    I’d greatly appreciate any help.

    Thanks

    James

    POST ONCE PLEASE

    Jazzer,

Pick the most appropriate forum and post a single question in a single forum. Do not post the same question in 5 fourms. It's annoying.

Sounds like the wah wah 'talk box' instrument Joe Walsh & Peter Frampton made popular back in the 70's. It requires an amplifier and can be heard on Frampton Comes Alive...an album everyone had 30 years ago. It's small and is inserted half-way into the mouth. The rest is left up to circuitry that alters the input. You can actually understand words spoken, too, and not just sounds made by the mouth.

        Thanks Zoobie.

I’m old enough to remember Frampton ( the ‘face’ of 68 )

I hadn’t thought of a wah wah 'talk box' but I think you’re right. That is probably what it was. Dream like sound. Would love to find out where I can buy the tune done thro this instrument.

Hail, hail, to buskers everywhere. They colour my day.
