    Chetumal - Mexico

This is the last big city before the Belize border. It's surprisingly boring and quiet for a biggish place - we were there on a religious holiday, so it might be a lot better on other nights. There is an unsuitable park across from the mercado at the end of Gandhi street, not enough clear concrete without planters. There is also a lovely new plaza in front of the government buildings by the water, lots of food carts and holiday decorations. If there had been people, this would have been the place.

We found the town unfriendly and it was the first place in Mexico where we caught people obviously ripping us off because we were white. We would not go back or attempt to do a show.

I do not recommend the Hotel Ucum. Not even for the catchy name. It's cheap and clean, but they lied to us about not having the (cheaper) rooms without TV and were unfriendly.

I was about to say that Gav... great reporting...
I worked down the west coast of Mexico about 15 years ago...
Puerto Vallarta was the best! Amazing waterfront pitch and a healthy mix of both Mexican and international tourists. Here's a pic:

RE: The hotel in Chetumal, did they at least live up to their name?
