Cute, touristy town with a lot of expats living there for weeks or more, mostly American retirees and post-college travelers from all over the world. There is a small circus scene, with an aerial dance school run casually in another gym.
The Pitch - the plaza on the north/uphill side of the Jardin, in front of the two big churches.
Time of Day - midmorning or early evening. Late night crowds also possible on weekends.
The Deal - go to the Municipal Palace, which is before you enter the old town centro and get a permit. Permits take 2-3 days to get, but you can fax or email in advance with a description of your show. PM me for exact contact info if you need it. Permits are free, you do not need insurance, and they are easy to get. They do not issue permits during December - too many other events.
DO NOT attempt to do a show without a permit, the police station is immediately opposite the pitch and they are paying very close attention. They do not believe you unless you are holding a permit.
We did not actually get to do a show, but everyone was very nice, and when we verbally passed the word the night before and at breakfast, we had 10 people turn up plus passersby ready to stop.
Parking is very tough. Be prepared to drive around for awhile.
Lodging is cheap (US$10/MEX$110/night) and clean at Hostal Alcatraz on Relox, four blocks from the Jardin, and their sister property two blocks further, Hostal Inn.
El Carreo, on Carreo, 1/2 block from the Jardin, had good food at reasonable prices. There is also an excellent breakfast cafe opposite Alcatraz on Relox.
