Want to go to Oz this winter...

I was thinking of going to Oz this summer. I have enough dough to buy a camper van, which I think is the only way to travel. Thing is, I'm a foreigner (a Yank.). Anyone know the law for registering and insuring cars to foreigners? I was WAY expensive in Scandinavia, where I wanted to by my last camper. I ended up going to Holland to buy one, where it was much cheaper...
So if you have any info/advice, I would be much appreciated...

Greycat, you should not have too much trouble. Your American licence will surfice and third party insurance is automatically included in the registration fee.
Insuring the vehicle itself (and any other vehicle you may crash into) is not compulsory but wise. You can enquire with and probably join the Campervan and Motor-home Club of Aust. (CMCA) who offer a terrific insurance policy (it costs me $640 to fully comprehensively cover my $85,000 Winnebago, with great extras). You should be able to find their website easily. It also has a good classified section where you'll find many vehicles for sale. Good Luck.
    Every-one should watch their drawers!
