    Border protection

If you can get a work visa...

We as Australian's are a little bit scared of foreigners - You guys look funny. We will do everything within our powers to protect ourselves against outsiders - especially vagrant ones like buskers. We must protect the children...we...we...invasion...argh....

Sydney has just changed it's policy you cannot get a permit without a work visa.

Melbourne is perhaps a little more lenient - though I believe you need to have a place of residence (+ 2 week audition process)...You will need public liability insurance.

You will probably have more luck at festivals and smaller towns. Good luck

        Keep out the Krims

        Hi there
I worked Byron a few years ago. You need a license, for a license you need a work visa (and bucket, extinguisher, fure blanket, Public Liability, 1st Aid!!!! - I was doig Fire but still!!!) anyway I got it all and my whole troupe worked without any troubles for a few months.
Brisbane you need to take an audition which are only every 3 months.
        I think Melbourne's easier
Adelaide look for Mr. Spin on here
        Sydney - nightmare now!!
Generally Oz is kinda hard to work.
Must be all the Krims, trying to work there
Keep us posted on where you find

            busking in melbourne australia

i busk sax in melbourne and live here. the permit system is really lax and free for the "city of melbourne" but you can also busk in a seaside suburb called "st. kilda" (about 4km out of centre), where the cops only hassle you if they have recieved a specific complaint, or are selling meth-amphetamines.

wherever you try you'll have fun and enjoy good hats

I have already obtained my holiday work visa and will be arriving in Sydney on Nov. 5 and staying for 1 month.

From the applications I have read it doesn't seem too unreasonable to get a permit in Sydney. What makes it such a nightmare?

Also, since I have confirmed tickets and holiday work visa the 2nd to last step would be public liability insurance. Can anyone recommend a good company or broker. I want to busk Circular Quay, The Rocks, and Darling harbor.

                              Laurent,

So you don't need a work visa to get a city of Sydney busking permit. Interesting. Was there any issue bringing your gear through customs without a work visa?

And as for the locations... I was under the impression you could, for the most part, set up where you like. Are those listed locations the only places in Sydney you're allowed to set up shop?
