    monterey, calif.

cannery row seemed alright but slow trickle saw one busker said he had a lease to busk there....what ever that means. gave me great advice tho to go to the fishermans warf.

fishermans warf in monterey was perfect easy crowd build. no hassle from cops great money.

i don't know if you need a permit never got hassled.

only saw two workers a guitar busker and a caricature artist. other then that had the place to my self. its late november weathers great. businesses liked me. lots and lots of rich people.

the buskers there were a little crazy and obssed with laws and not wanting to look like buskers, i just ignored there inane advices and went to work.

the guitar player seemed to be the only sane one but he was new to busking and not from calif.

i'm not sure how it's spelled if it's montarey or montorey, i dunno it's in california.

i'm thinkin about goin up there again soon, it seems to be the best pitch i've experienced in california.

      hey there -

our friend bruce (bed of nails show) went up to perform in monterey for the jazz festival and was shut down before he even got 10 minutes into his show. Is there some secret place there that is fantastic where the police watch along in joy.

not sure - he said it was some spot that was an amazing pitch. i'll try and get him on this forum to talk about it - he's not the most savvy computer user though - so it may take some time-

I'd like to get to the bottom of it though - because I'd love to drive up there and work - but only if it's worth the drive from L.A.

the fact is i hate california not just for street performing,

but also it's plastic regulation casteration culture,

but i gotta say monteray's "fisherman's warf" was the only good experience i had on a pitch in this state.

i really have got to defend it, as much as i don't want to defend any thing about calif.

it was big hats, no cops, and only two other buskers on a massive pitch. all the people were rich and there was no problem getting a crowd infact i remember the all the shop owners comming out to watch my show with the crowd.

but maybe calif. was sleeping that day while i was there and they are back to their old evil in monteray, i don't know.

if you go back let me know how it turns out and if I go I'll be sure to post it here.

to be clear - the exact spot is on fishermans wharf?? any landmarks there at all? or is it pretty obvious where the pitch is.

I also want to say that I think there are a lot of good pitches to be found here -

they are just impossible to find because:

                A. The state is so massive that you have no idea where to look.

                B. No performers want to come here and look for them because of the bad rep it has.

                C. A lot of spots that would be good are unworkable because of cops. But you have to remember that just because a lot of the spots are like this doesn't mean they all are.

the warf is a big circle pitch round plaza thing, infront infront of a pier with shops on it.

you can work the circle or on the pier. i worked the pier and a musician worked the circle.

i havn't been there in a while but i may be going up soon if i do i'll let you know what happens to me.

Sounds good... out of curiosity - were you doing close up/ table magic or larger circle shows?

... let us continue what now seems to be a personal conversation until the end of time. On this thread....

i don't do close up or use a table i have a parlor act or a 20 min half circle show. but i'm making a larger show.

my edge was far and wide when i was there and could hold a full circle no problem and is what inspired me to go bigger....i could have made more money.

but if your doing a close up or table act this could be good too and alot more low key if what your friend says pertains to the warf.

Hmmm....I know bruce attracts a larger crowd so maybe thats why they shut him down.... or maybe he was just unlucky.

                          - keep me posted the next time you are up there.

Another decent pitch that we have found is Huntington Beach on Tuesday Nights they have an event called Surf City Nights... We've only been there five times so far.

When we first started going the crowds were terrible but I've found every time we've gone the crowds get a little better and they pay a little bit more.
