We are an Australian acrobatic duo, trying to find busking work in Japan. A fellow performer Nick Nickolas suggested that we ask in this forum if anyone had any information for us (such as if anyone knew of anyone who had performed there before, where the pitches are, what festivals you can perform at ect.). Also I can speak Japanese so there is no language barrier. I would greatly appreciate any information anyone could spare on this subject.
Please help. Busking in Japan

Its a 2002 PDF but it mentions Katsuki who were the oldest and largest Tokyo based but Japan wide variety agency when i was there late 80s early nineties.
They seem to have morphed into OZ planning, can't find anything immediately on google with that.
Its always better to find and hit the company up from outside japan rather than going there and looking so do all your major research and initial contacts before you get there, it's worth more to you.
Go to a consulate and use your language skills to look up a directory, look at event planning companies.
Its a start.
Apparently most of tokyo's a no go busking wise now.
It used to be a goldmine. But now it's not allowed any more. Could be exceptions however.
Yokohama had an annual street theater festival, that might still exist.
And theres a massive prestigious street theatre festival up north.
Havn't done it but some here have, can't remember its name offhand.Last edited by martin ewen; Feb-09-2006, 08:46 PM. -
shizuoka
We busked in what was called the Shizuoka world cup a few years ago, a huge festival in November, very tightly run by the organisation, fun but over organised perhaps... there was the "competition" which used to have a large prize, and the "on" section which you could just busk at and they pay hotels and flights....But back then the hats were good (a damn sight better than our Japanese) But for some reason i have heard its not so hot now, but that may just be a rumour. The competition side of it was all rather extreme and a bit weird, the shows were packed and the hospitality extraordinary. And speaking japanese is a massive bonus!
