i think you'll find that the festivals have emptied most pitches in the summer. a plethora of festivals work much better for those performers that don't know how, or want to work, to draw a crowd. it's the difference twixt showcase and actual street.
fanieul hall in boston is prime example of showcase work. harvard sq is street. the difference is 50 to 100 tour busses a day.
har sq gets 5. this is due to parking of busses not attraction. the deal in seattle has always been pike place market. nice park on the end of it outside the rules big enough for circles. lots of homeless hangin out.
Yah... I grew up in Boston and have since relocated to Seattle.
The performers I saw during my vacation this summer @ Quincy Mkt/Fanieul hall were quite good and I'm sure are making good $$.
I have had good and great shows at the park at the end of the market. Give it a go. A real crap shoot on if the people there though. Nothing is consistant except the rain in that city. Portland saturday market is cool, but you have to like the mornings

is it liveable though?
i'm toying with the idea of kickin' my east coast habit and heading out that way.
SF, portland, seattle... all are on the list. so, in your experience, are hats comparable to, say, the square? the square on an off-day? (faneuil hall is its own breed..)
any thoughts are, of course, appreciated! and, strat1969, how did you find the transplant?

i was in seattle three years ago from january 0ne to mid march and made enough to pay rent in tacoma, a 45 minute bus ride south. i can give you a contact for cheap rent with a view of the bay. the money in pikes place market was comparable to harvard square at the time. the market has a website that gives the fees and things. jimmy hinde has worked the market for years and can tell you more.
he's at and is a great person. very open.
i hear they're still at a low rain count this year and in seattle that is really the deciding factor in workability in seattle. inside the market it stays busy but the outside dies in the rain.
there's some trouble workin around the needle, but like boston we(performers) won the right to work in the courts and it's supposed to be wide open. i'll be there next year, so if you go let me hear back.
on san fran, i hear there's a whole new set of rules, but haven't been able to figure out what they are. the big circle shows only work the shocase spots so they're useless to me and they don't care about any but thier own money so there's no help from them. i work there about every two years
and always have made good enough money to live. have fun and come see us in the sq on newyears day. it's sposed to be 45 n calm.
