Hi all,
I'm doing a major corporate thing alone in Singapore next week. It's mostly 9-5 and I desperately need to know if some-one can recommend a good hang-out where I can escape my hosts after hours.
Help me pls, Martin, Taxi, Robert, any-one.

What do you like? Bars? Pubs? Do you want to mix with locals or do you rather stick to people from your own country?

One night a very friendly lady took me to the Raffles to drink a Singapore Sling and after that, we went to the Fullerton, to drink in the bar that is located on the 72nd floor. It was one of the more memorable nights I had in Singapore, but I have to admit everything was paid for me...

Near Robbertson walk is a street with lots of bars and after one o'clock you can see the local youth there puking on the streets without getting a fine. In the bars you can drink beers and at some point, in some bars, you might get offered some prostitutes, for if you have "the itch", I was told. They also told me that Chinese girls are the most expensive and that Thai girls cost next to nothing. They didn't mention any itch or rash that may appear after the visit.

But maybe it's best to find yourself a local girl that is happy to show you around...

If you're willing to go a little further than Clarke/Raffles etc,
a wonderful lady called Cindy runs a really relaxed bar on the beach
on Sentosa Island aptly called the Sentosa Beach Bar. By cab it's 20
minutes or so from Raffles Place and you probably still have to pay
to enter Sentosa Island (the Darling Harbour of Singapore minus the
pedestrians - spare a thought for Martin, Andrew Elliott and me who
spent 40 odd days and nights busking it on a daily basis). Cirque de
S used to hang there as well as past River buskers acts so it's seen
a few of our world thru it's doors.

Walking around in Little India and Chinatown is good as well. Lots of things to see, I also remember a food market under a shopping mall. Live animals waiting to be eaten and lots of exotic fruit and veggies to be seen there.

Lots of temples as well. The big Chinese temple near (or in) Chinatown is also worth a visit. You won't spend long there, but it's interesting to see the people throwing sticks and praying. Same for the buddhist temple, very colourfull and interesting enough for a visit. Don't forget to take your shoes off...

For food, avoid the places where all the tourists eat. You will pay at least five times as much for a pretty inferior meal. Somehow 'for tourists' is always translated as 'deep fried' and 'avoid any fresh food'. Go to the places where the Chinese eat themselves, I have had pretty good meals for 3 or 4 SPD out there.

Dom, I thought busking is illegal out there? Did you just take the risk or did you get a licence somehow?

We were brought in from Australia to busk in Sentosa. Although
a district of Singapore, it seems to be able to bypass the main
Singaporean bylaws being an island & tourist/theme park. So we
had the right to hat our audiences at the end of our daily circle
shows but the crowds were a lot sparser than had we been working
Clarke Quay or Orchard Road. Apparently the place is even quieter
now. The big draw was the Merlion light/laser/water/night show.

Back then and even now, busking is not illegal, it's simply been
made legally and economically unviable for non-residents and/or professionals.
