Amsterdam street performers protest against city council

    WAR WITH CITY COUNCIL:

The Amsterdam city council doesn't any longer issue street performing licenses to performers from outside the European Union. We don't like this and we want to fight it (see www.straattheater.info). Legal stuff around this has already started. Some local politicians and their lawyer are backing us up in this and will put pressure from the inside.

Further, the council is pulling our leg and full of apathy for two years now. Great acts are made illegal, or are still illegal, without any sense-making reason. We see the Amsterdam pitches dying slowly but steadily. Alltogether, the city council is systematically killing circle show street theatre, consciously or sub-consciously.
We don't like that so much neither.

We had enough of being ignored, neglected and always being put in the last place. Our patience and their benefit of the doubt has run out.

    WHAT:

So we want to organize a street theatre protest demonstration. The idea behind it is to show the public and the press great and positive street theatre acts and tell them they will miss it in the future - if it is up to the city council of Amsterdam. Instead of money lines we will do 'signature-lines' ;-)

    WHO:

For this we need (preferably) hot, non-EU performers or performers using music-choreographed routines, but of course *any* performer's support is greatly needed and appreciated. Also non-circle-acts like stiltwalking, ballon-sculpturing etc. could help to collect signatures and enrich the overall atmosphere.

The ideal is to create a powerfull divers program of a few hours, for instance 15 routines of 15 minutes or so. Only with a good program we can get the people's attention and get the press to come, watch, and cover our story. If we merge our professional power, we could create something of great impact the city council simply can not ignore.

Besides acts and routines, we also need 'hands and heads' for organizing the whole thing before, and on the day itself.

    WHEN & WHERE:

As it looks now, the protest demonstration will be on Sunday, September 5th on Dam Square (yes, Amsterdam). This is the first weekend after the Edinburgh festival.
Date still depends on some unsure factors, but mostly on the performers available. Another option is to do it the following weekend, i.e. Sunday 12 September.
(update: Saturday Sept 11 Dam Sq. and Leidseplein are already occupied by another event)

    LEGAL:

Just for clarity: participating does NOT involve a legal risk, since this is a protest demonstration which is guaranteed by the Dutch constitution. This is not 'normal' street performing.

    PLACE TO STAY:

For performers who don't have any place to stay in Amsterdam we will try to find something for free or at least very cheap. But sources are pretty limited, so if you can arrange something yourself, thats great.

    TELL OTHERS:

Think about it, talk about it, spread the word.
Together we can open the city council's eyes and make Amsterdam a party pitch again. But it would only work when we do this together, as a team.

    TELL US:

Please let us know a.s.a.p. if you are into participating, when you could be in Amsterdam, and what you could do to help. Knowing that, we can make a more specific plan.

Any other feedback or ideas are welcome too.

    Follow-up: Amsterdam street performer's protest 5 sept.

Slowly but steadily our protest event is getting somewhere. Here are some practical facts - and some questions for you:

    DATE FIXED:
We managed to get the date fixed on Sunday, September 5th.
The city council is still nagging about amplification (pretty crucial for our protest), the route and permission for placing some kind of stage, but those are details.
    The date is fixed!

    PROGRAM:
The planning of the actual program is still under development, but roughly it looks like this:

12:00 Gather on Leidseplein, some entertainment and collecting signatures
13:00 Start protest walk to Dam Square
14:00 More or less contineous acts (team-show format), collecting signatures
16:00 Press conference (lets hope they will be there ...)
16:30 Continue with performing and collecting signatures
20:30 Close-off - it's dark by then, an impressive fire act would be great, if not a massive team-finale

The next day, Monday morning, we want to offer our petition and possibly a video coverage of our protest to the Mayor of Amsterdam. We want to make this a 'colourfull' event as well, possibly with also the press present. We still need to get an appointment with the Mayor fixed, thus unsure for now, but I guess nobody has a gig on Monday morning ;-)

    PERFORMING:
Unlike what we said before, the performing part will *not* be filled in with separate shows of individual performers and having breaks inbetween every act.

Instead we will do a teamshow format: each performer does a routine of around 10 minutes. Introductions of each performer are done by an MC or the previous performer. Every performer can do his/her version of the 'signature-lines' within his/her routine. We aim for blocks of 1 or 1,5 hour. During each block we can 'bottle' for signatures a few times. We can do some 'serious' talking inbetween those blocks.

Like this we save ourselves the 'drag' of drawing an audience every time. Also, the impact of every routine is probably higher, the pace more constant and we are more flexible regarding acts coming in extra or dropping out. Besides we emphasize the team-spirit a bit more.

A few performers came up with this, and we think it has only advantages. Sorry for the confusement ...

    ATTITUDE:
    Just to be clear:
Above all, we want to make this protest a positive event. We have to show the city council we are professional, high quality, positive, clean and safe. They must come to the conclusion Amsterdam is better off WITH us.
Please do not start throwing bricks at the police or so.

    PETITION:
We already want to start with collecting signatures now. A downloadable version (163 kB) is available on our web site at this location:

You are encouraged to print it out and ask around for signatures. If necessary, we can also send it by normal mail, just give us a postal address.

Every signature helps, but try to avoid doubles. Also performers who are not around on the 5th can help with this.

Bring the page with the signatures with you to Amsterdam, or send it to this address:
    SAS
    P.o.box 58006
    1040 HA Amsterdam
    The Netherlands
This address is also mentioned at the bottom of the petition page.
If sending, please do it before end of August, so it reaches us in time. The page does not need to be completely full.

    PLANNING:
Up to now we got quite some positive reactions, but many are still a 'maybe', which makes things a bit tough to plan.

We totally understand everybody is in their season and upcoming gigs etc. might be in the way.
But please (PLEASE!) let us know as soon as you can be sure:

    - Will you be in Amsterdam for the protest on Sept. 5th?
    - When do you arrive?
    - Do you need us to organize you a place to stay? In case you are more than one, how many people?
    - Anything else you need?

The more we know and the sooner, the better we can try to make things run smooth and powerful.

Hey, thanks again for your support! Next email I'll try to keep it shorter ... really ...

Latest on Amsterdam protest 5 sept.

Here's the latest info on the protest event in Amsterdam Sunday Sept 5th. Things are going well ...

        PRESS:
We are already contacted by some TV crews, had a live interview on 3FM (important national radio station), a looong interview by the ANP (the Dutch national press bureau), some local media and the word is spreading ...
Another press release will be sent out on the Friday before, emphasizing the actual protest day.

        PETITION:
We did a try-out last weekend on Leidseplein, during 'normal' street performing. As soon as we mention "no license for non-EU performers" people sign instantly ... After 500 signatures, the council starts to listen. We already have 300. We aim for 1000+ or, if we are positive, 2000. We printed forms for more.

We present the petition on the following monday.

        IN-DOOR POLITICIANS:
We got support from more political parties within the city council of Amsterdam.

        WEATHER:
Weather forecast looks good: 22 celcius, thin clouds, no wind, and DRY.
That's pretty close to perfect, eh?

        PERFORMING:
We've got a soundsystem. You just need to bring your source (CD, MD, wireless mike) and your props.
For those who want or need, there will be a stage of 4x5 meter.

So far we have 15 performers for sure. Another 15 performers vary from 'maybe to 'probably'. We expect a few (a lot?) to come in by total surprise.

So we've got a core to get something very nice going.
With some more performers (especially non-EU!) we can make it something damn powerfull!
Hey, if you're doubting, just come and let's make it a real big party, with heaps of signatures!

        PROGRAM Sunday Sept 5th:
        12:00 Gather at Leidseplein
        12:30 Move to Dam Square
        13:30 Arrival at Dam Square
        14:00 Performing and collecting signatures
        20:30 Grand finale

        AFTER-PARTY
        22:00 After-party in Anita

        ARRIVING IN AMSTERDAM / CONTACT:
At arrival in Amsterdam you can contact
        Frank home phone: (removed)
        Frank mobile phone: (removed)
        Jeroen mobile phone: (removed)
For international connections: +31, then drop the first zero.

The mobile numbers will be with us on the protest day itself too.

          last one ...

One more time the latest on our protest of last September 5th.

For everybody who gave us their support in writing: many thanks! Knowing that many were with us in thought, strengthened us in organizing the event.

Special thanks to everybody who actually joined the protest in person. It was impressive to see how everybody did their best to make the event a success. And as a team we did make it a success!
          - Non-stop shows for appreciative audience between 2 and 9 PM
          - Over 2200 signatures
          - News item on two TV stations
          - Large front page coverage on two regional papers
          - Small articles in over 20 newspapers nationwide
          - A few dedicated articles in magazines are coming up
          - Impressing and shaking the city council (?)
          - An upcoming serious meeting (finally) with some people really in charge
          - A debat within the city council meeting
And we are not finished yet, we are just beginning ...

A streaming video compilation of that Sunday is on-line.

But ... when watching the video, bear in mind that we are totally aware of some performers not showing as they deserve. Really, this has *nothing* to do with the value of that act, or anything like that. We tried to cover the feeling of that day as well and smart as possible, knowing that not only performers will watch the video, but also the (international) public, the press, and -last but not least- the city council.

We had to deal with many technical and tactical difficulties and find a balance between EU and non-EU acts, routines using music versus speech, routines on stage and on the pavement, an overall diversity, prime time crowd, etc. All this with only 1.5 hours of very rough material covering a 9 hour day and with lack of battery power on sometimes crucial moments ...

Believe me, it has been a very difficult job. Please do not feel passed or not appreciated or so for any reason. On the contrary, all performers have showed strong teamwork and a family spirit, letting go of individual or short term interests.

Okay, now check it out ... ;-)

You would need Windows Media Player (.wmv format) and a connection of at least 256 kbps (cable, lan, dsl, etc. should work). Sorry for Mac users ... we are working on getting more versions in decent quality on-line.

I will not post any more messages on performers.net or send emails. News updates and other info will be posted on the web site:

Once again, thanks a lot, and hope to see you soon - with a license, or without a license being necessary.

          Love and hugs,

          Frank van Dijk

            Inspirational

Kudos to all who participated, and special appreciation of those who organized the day, and those who put the video together.

I am inspired by your unselfish and democratic concept.

Question- did you need a permit to hold your event? If so, your City Council can't be all bad if they gave you a permit to demonstrate directly against their ruling?

              dutch democrazy

              Thanks :-)

It was a 'contitutional' demonstration, not an event or festival or so, so basically no license is needed for that - quite difficult for them to stop that. Hey, we still have *some* rights in our constitutional democracy ...

But ... we needed an expensive 'object license' for the stage, they were making problems about the power supply for the soundsystem, we couldn't walk the route we wanted, they left the date and place approval unsure untill short before, etc.. On many details they tried to frustrate the protest and made it tough and tricky. For some things we had triple backups.

Yes, you can demonstrate, but to do it well you need money and a strong heart. No, they weren't particularly nice and easy ...

It was funny when we announced the protest:
"And what do you want to protest against?"
              "Well, eeh ... against you."
