Well, I'm just an American, but from my own research, 66% of the people in Montreal have "Knowledge of English". Also, it appears that the majority of the population works in the service industry, with industry/manufacturing coming in a fairly distant second. Soulless statstics, however, are useless in the real world. I am looking for information on the city myself - my pressingquestions (if anyone can answer them): What are living expenses like? How receptive would an audience in Montreal be to an American busker satirizing America? How many buskers work the area, and what kinds of restrictions are there on street performing (permits, etc?)?
Appreciate any help. -
Hiya People. I'm Julianne living right Downtown in Montreal. My Husband has been a street performer for 6 years and I have been with him for 3. I did one year of street performing before having my son.
Street performing is alive and well in Montreal. There are 4 major places to perform. SAINT-CATHERINE STREET, THE OLD PORT, THE SUBWAY SYSTEM, and PRINCE ARTHUR PARK.
Saint-Catherine: No permit needed for buskers. No amplification equipment allowed.
Old Port: Permit needed. I think it's 50$ for the summer.
Subway (Metro) System: No permit needed. Amplification equipment allowed.
Prince Arthur park: Permit needed. Again, I think it's 50$ No amplification equipment.
Montreal is so muliticultural that you will draw a crowd even if you don't speak french, but it's PC if you do or at least try.
Feel free to ask specific questions, I would be glad to answer.Comment

Alright - when does the season traditionally start? I'm a New Englander by birth, so the cold doesn't bother me much, but of course if it bothers the crowd, it's pretty hopeless. I would like to work for much of April, if that's possible, but I don't know. weather.com says it's 12f (only 3f with wind chill) in Montreal today, and april isn't far off. Let me know, and thanks.Comment
