I worked it 2004 but you have to be booked into it, Esp(Halifax) used to do the street show for it but I think JFL gave up on that Idea.
You have no chance just rocking up there, they will shut you down right away. It is not an amazing festival though unless you are a comic booked inside a venue.
Try the Jazz it is heaps better.

We performed at JFL last year. We got the gig through ESP in Halifax. It was a fun trip as Montreal is a great city, but busking at the festival wasn't that great. The money was alright, we heard that it was tough to get money out of people but we figured it would be worth a shot anyways. The festival also has paid acts that are performing on the street, so people are seeing those shows for free and then wondering why they should pay us. Also the festival sometimes brought the paid acts onto the only busking pitch sometimes which was frustrating. We would only do the festival again as a paid act though.

I did it in 2003, also via ESP. It was kinda difficult, to be one of the very few buskers in the midst of huge spectacles that were all there for free. I am not always very goog at ramming the message to give money into people's heads in situations like that, so the hats were not what I expected them to be.

But still I wouldn't mind to do the gig again. Montreal is a great city where American cornyness meets European style. Lots of good places to go and a pretty relax attitude towards 'the alternative'. And although I realize women abroad always look better, the Montreal girls just are great no matter where you come from...
