    Pay options

What are the prefered ways to pay performers at festivals:
If you had the option of going to a festival would you prefer to
a: get paid and not be allowed to put a hat out
b: recieve enough for accommodation and a bit for travel and keep everything that you get in the hat.
    c: or variations of those

I hope to hear from you all,

    Thanks

    Are you kidding?

Get paid!!!! A stipend of at least $500, plus travel and lodging need to be reimbursed.

Buskers festivals that bring in professional, international quality acts (Halifax, Waterloo, Edmonton, etc) offer:

        - Travel
        - Accomodations
        - daily stipend
        - Pass the Hat
        - coupons for free / discount meals at area restaurants
        - T-shirt

            Right on , Eric!

            I should also add...

At these festivals, performers are obligated to do TV / Radio / Newspaper interviews and usually perform in one or more gala fundraiser shows or "public relations" shows. For example, the Waterloo festival has THREE fundraiser shows (Festival of Fools gala event, Late Night Adult Show, and the Vaudeville show). Last year at Halifax, myself and two other perfomers did a show a local children's hospital.

Sometimes, performers are given additional compensation and sometimes not.

One thing to remember... happy performers will bend over backwards for you and do everything they can to make the event a resounding success.

I think it's just desperate ass licking performers that bend over backwards or forwards for events that pay you very little to do all these extra events. Professionals actually get paid to do their job.
That is unless by 'happy', you mean those on drugs.

On a completely different side note, how many people here actually take what they read on the internet seriously ?

just to get back to this, conor. why do you want to know? are you arranging events, or involved with events, or just darn curious? if this is really about gigs, we ought to keep going bout that, if not, maybe we could start a thread about bending and writing

I think the answer depends a lot on how well the event is done, and whether it has a proven track record. A really well run fest can get away with paying less or none because the hats will be huge. But if the performers don't know whether the fest has it's act together, then a guaranteed payment of enough to make it worthwhile is going to be necessary to get good performers.

You have to ask your self what will this event cost me as to how much will I make.
So if I can’t pass the hat then you’re going to have to pay me more.
And you’re going to pay my accommodation and travel.
Most of the time I get a fee and hat.
