    Shouting?

Hey when Ive been doing some shows lately - I try to talk loud so everyone can hear me but then it ends up into me screaming sort of- how can I get away from that?

Amplification system. There are a few posts about them in the 'tools of the trade' forum, including reccomendations for virtually all pieces in a system.

Alternately, you might consider speaking to a vocal coach, who can help you work on supporting your sound. This will help you both with vocal endurance and also with your sound quality. They can help you lose that screaming quality and help you to get that booming quality so useful on the street.

I was fortunate enough to work with a vocal coach throughout high school free of charge. In most cases, though, an amplification system is probably more cost effective.

Oh, a note on that for you -

I didn't know what it meant to 'support sound' for the longest time. Turns out, it means taking full, deep breaths (so that your stomach seems to inflate, not your chest), and then tightening the diaphragm when you sing or speak.

One excersize my teacher had me do, was to lie down on the floor with a book on my stomach. When I would breathe in, the book was supposed to rise, and then as I spoke/sang, I was supposed to tighten the stomach muscles the way one might while doing a sit-up.

If there's anybody here who knows anything about this, please correct me.

i've been doing voice work this year as well and some of the exercises we've done have been-
laying on the floor, alternate between breathing high in the chest then breathing low in the stomach like bogle explained. then fill up the lower left part of your stomach, then the lower right. then fill up the lower left or right side and without exhaling move the air to the other side. also move the air from the right side of the chest to the left side of the stomach. the idea, i think, is to gain control and awareness of how you breathe. then breathing deep in the stomach again and saying "ooooooooo" as loud as you can but without screaming... a bit like the ooommm chanted during meditation.
then grab a partner or pretend you've got one, stand 10 yards from that person or figment of your imagination and speak as loud as you can but without using your vocal chords, only breathe(air)... a whisper of sorts. with a partner its easier cuz you get feedback as to whether they can hear you and if you are using your voice. i hope these instructions make sense! then using your voice alternate distances(5 to 30 feet i'd say) with your partner practice breathing deep in your stomach and have conversations without shouting.
boh! i'm learning too and these exercises have helped alot. hopefully it makes some sense.
        have fun
