    Making The Leap...?

Okay.. I've been thinking about this for a while now, and who better to ask than the lot of people on p-net!

I just finished highschool last June. That year, from pretty much the April before graduation until around September, I was doing constant shows. I got back home and then could not figure out my next move. I wanted to jump a plane and fly to Australia and really develop the show out there, but in the end I found it intimidating and I was having trouble getting ahold of some festival coordinators. I wanted to just go and try doing the pitches that the regulars do, but everyone I've asked who have done them say they're so hard that you'll only make enough to live.

I don't know where to go in the States that has decent pitches in this time, and I want to make the leap to doing street full time like I told myself I would. But something about it just intimidates me. Something is holding me back. Perhaps I'm just being cautious, and I'm booked pretty solid for summer 2003 in Canada already, but what can I do to make this a year round thing? Travel is inevitable.. But to where?

What logistical things will I have to deal with? Is shipping prop knives and torches and things a problem? Will they let you take a Crate amp on a plane as carry on? What if I get stuck in some weird country with no way to get home?

Somebody, I need to be righted and pointed in the correct path. I don't want this PT job I have right now any longer. I'm salivating for the taste of the circle. I'm salivating for the cheers and applause. I'm salivating for the ching ching of money in the hat.
I think I've got a decent show and I know it's developed, especially this year. People like it. I just don't know what to do next.

I know this is a lot to take in, but anyone who could offer me any suggestions, it'd mean a lot to me. I don't want to atrophy.

    Happy new year!

The hardest thing to do is to make the decision , after that its easy well , sometimes . If you want to go , then go . Life is very easy if you can make people laugh or do things impressivly . In Spain its impossible to starve, that is if you can do your show in Spanish or without words , the police stole my knives though .

You just have to read your own post to know that you have already made the important decision which is to do it. Now you just have to. Life is an adventure and most people in ordinary jobs get pretty lame assed ones. Our adventures are cool!!! Trapped in a foreign country??? You'll survive and itll be good material. Troubles with airlines???? You'll survive and it'll teach you the system. Don't know where to go??? Go anywhere and make your own path. Your lucky you have a suitcase that lets you do anything at all that you want.
My advice Daniel, if you have the price of an airfare, quit your job today and fly to somewhere warm, smuggle your show stuff in and learn to swim by yourself. Youll be a better person.
Ive seen your show and you wont have a problem based on that and what is wrong with just surviving anyway??? Your 18 and shouldnt be obsessed with banking it.
Once more, stop thinking, start doing, make your own adventure, go where people havent been before and maybe youll be the one who finds his very own 7 day a week circle show heaven that pays hard currency.
        Good Luck
        Lee

I went to LA for the winter and lost all the money I had saved from the summer, and had to come home or be homeless, but it was worth it in terms of life experience. I guess your a lot like me, not going to college, attending the school of life instead.
I'm gonna be leaving town again in a month or less with less money than before, and it's gonna suck really bad, but oh well. I'm not very scared.
Options I know of for the US.
You could go to New Orleans and learn how to build a croud out of nothing, I got my perverbial ass kicked last year at mardi gras (but that was allmost a year ago).
You could go to San Fransisco and hang out with all the other young jugglers like us in line for hours every night.
I think you can do key west with all the old farts, they have some kind of system for the big pitch and I don't know what it is. I do have a friend who works there though, so if you really want to know I'll find out for you.
If you want to do LA.... You will have to make a new show. I'll give you the number to call for universal city walk. Otherwise you may want to get a chainsaw for the days and really dope glowing stuff for the nights. It's the place to be if you want to be in movies or on tv.
I don't know anything about traveling by plane for performing.
I feel ya bro, I hate my part time job as well. Cooking just doesn't give you the same rock star feeling. I'll see ya out there.

See Peter, San Fransisco was always an idea.
So was L.A., but why would I have to re-invent my show?
            What about NYC or Denver?
            How about Amsterdam?

These were ALL ideas I had.

The start of a season is the better time to begin, NY, Denver (Boulder I presume), Boston etc are going to be just bleak and dour from now until summer.
(and even in summer they are pale comparisons to the vibrancy and variation found abroad)
Alternatively, Sydney is still possible, Perth has even a longer summer and a large pedestrianised inner city with a $25 a month permit and fremantle (the port) is an easy place to start up (in the weekends)but still you are looking at the end of the season with 2 months left.
If you can hold off till may/june then go to Europe, amsterdams Ok but Copenhagens better, (shinier less haggard punters) English is the common language.
Edinburgh fest in scotlands worth a visit if you've made enough to travel around, Dublins also an experiment (but no guarantees as they'll eat you alive if your weak-same goes for Glasgow)
With a whole season ahead of you you should be at the very least able to support yourself .
If you go off now and hit the limited pitches of Nth America you will in my opinion hardly be doing yourself any favors. My pick for escape this week is Perth.

L.A. has rules. In Santa Monica (Santa Monica is part of LA) they wouldn't even let me stand on my box, I have a blue one just like yours (I looked at the pics on your site). On Venice beach they get uptight if you play your amp too loud in some spots, they won't let you use fire, and the audience is gonna be a LOT different than what you get anyplace else. I didn't get anywhere in LA until I gave up on my show. And durring the winter both of these spots are only good on the weekends. San Fran is only good on the weekends during winter as well.
Martin is right about new york and Denver (boulder). I know that the season in Boulder starts the end of may/early june. Right now you may as well be in Canada.

Hey Daniel, Save some $ if your state side and give Key West a try. Ya, their are old farts but they do the same show, every day for 20 years. Ya gotta be able to give it a run. Hey if it does'nt work you live in your van, shower at the beach, Thats what you do if it works. Does'nt work, theirs Grayhound. If you've got any show at all you'll make a few bucks. Break a leg
