    Notes on Busking

    Notes on street performing

{Just a few random notes I made while sitting in my pitch between shows. -Z)

I find that the first couple of hours usually suck ass- if you can stick through these, it usually gets better. Dont force it there will be good and bad shows. Because of this you should start as early as possible.

In most businesses, you exchange money for time. As a street performer you exchange money for energy. Never forget that energy is your commodity. Squandering your energy costs you money. Doing a lousy show costs you money. Carrying heavy equipment costs you money. Parking too far from your pitch costs you money. Frequently you will do better in a longer day with fewer shows per hour than you would by cramming the same number of shows into a shorter time.

It is useful to be able to tell which people are tippers. At the same time one must be careful not to prejudge. Its a toss up...you dont want to waste your energy on stiffs but sometimes you will be surprised at who does and doesnt tip. Developing this skill at cold reading is one of the benifits of this school.

Your costume should be tough and durable..it will get put through its paces.

Your mental state is important -- your anger, your fear, all of your negative emotions will be transferred to your audience. They won t realise why, they will just knöw that they dont like you. Of course the opposite is also true. A positive mental state will induce pleasure-in the audience. Of course, you cant just wait until you .re in a good mood youll go broke. You need to be able to call up a positive state on command.
