    GERMAN WHEEL

okay - i don't know if this is the right catagory for this - but, following jim's suggestion i thought i'd start a new conversation on the topic of performing.

    my thoughts are this:

i have been working on developing new skill sets over the past year and a half. the extent up until now of my variety skills has been fire-eating, poi, staff and doing escapes. i've gotten a pretty good grasp (passable) on juggling over the past year & am about ready to start priming myself for performance.

i want to start a new skill.

my flat-mate trains at the sf circus center & has been busting my hump about doing hardcore upper body conditioning.

he's suggested german wheel... then move onto aerial stuff. (2 year plan.) which i find cool. but, it seems like german wheel isn't that great an idea for me as far as performing is concerned -- as i play mostly small theatre/club venues. so i was thinking of working on some slight of hand, too... but, i find that kind of boring. everyone does magic.

on the other hand i like the german wheel idea because i'd have abs of steel, arms which could crush mere mortals and be able to do something really cool looking.

and, i'd love to get to a place where i feel strong enough to start doing some basic aerial work - that concept has facinated me since i was a child.

thoughts? experiances with german wheel? other things you think i should try?

    thanks all,
    f.g.

Did you see Chris Lashua's wheel act in the Circus Center's holiday show last December? That's the standard which all other wheel acts are measured against.

no, i didn't. but, there is tape i can watch, i imagine.

i have seen cirque's wheel acts & the cube thing -- how similar are they? the cube thingie, i mean... to german wheel.

i just can't think of where i'd be able to use it.

but, it sounds like so much fun to learn.

The wheel act and the cube manipulation act are completely different diciplines and have very different techniques and asthetic feels. I just assumed since you were in the Bay area and were associated with the Circus Center (and seemed to be interested in German Wheel) you would have seen the show.

Check it out if you get a chance.

          Wheelz

          Chris Lashua: http://www.wheelworkbychris.com

Also, Dominique (originally of Spring Action Trampoline) is now doing a wheel act in Europe: http://www.wheelinmotion.com

They both have videos on their sites.

          Ahhh... a real thread.

i'm not. my flat-mate, david, is. he is training there and teaching the circus apprentice program. amazing juggler/acrobat/slack rope/aerialist...

i'm really trying to push myself with my craft right now. (acting/variety) i feel at a point that i need to do so or i'm going to stagnate.

i know very little about either german wheel or the cube - except that i think they both look magnificant.

that and i really want at some point to try aerial work - particularly the silks.

you're always very helpful with advice and suggestions, steven - thank you. i appreciate it.

jim - thanks for the links. i'm going to go check them out tomorrow when i have some time...

now i must sleep - believe it or not i'm speaking at a career day tomorrow. IMAGINE!
