I would never inflict such a thing on an audience, however, every day on my way to do shows, I sing "When you're a jet" from West-Side Story to myself.Comment

Singing in shows
I often put music in my shows, and in the last two, I have required the audience to sing with me. One whole section of one show is about making the audience wear a bowl on their head and sing along with me. Of course, I do it solo first, and the character is very innocent and playful, so it makes perfect sense for her to want everyone to sing with her.
Main thing is to make sure that they are ok with knowing that they don't have to be perfect, coaching them or making the song so easy that it doesn't matter if they don't get it right. Letting them laugh while they sing. Acknowledging that you look much sillier and are ok with it, so they don't have to look silly.
That being said, your age range is very tough to do this with. You are in a life range where most are so afraid of looking stupid, nothing will get them to play. It take as change of environment and reality (no, I don't mean drugs, I mean a theatrical context) and hopefully being away from their peers. They can, I have seen it, but it's very rare.
The story set up in how you create your work will be the best way to get them involved. Give them a reason to sing it, a reason that is "important" and the will be involved in the context rather than with the fact they are singing. It's like getting the audience to go "ooooh, ahhh, wow" in a preshow. You set up the game and then they aren't afraid.
They also have to trust that you are not making fun of them and that you are not trying to make them look stupid.
Hope that helps,Comment

It's an "Age" thing.
High school kids are too self conscious to sing along, unless you make it comedy or sarcasm.
Older people, especially seniors will sing along every time.Comment

An additional thought-
To get your audience going, make it a contest. Divide the room in left and right halves , or front and back halves, so many rows , or girls against boys, and that should spur them on.Comment
