Daniel Shulruff - Busking Photo Gallery

Most of you may know Daniel Shulruff as the tall bearded gentleman traveling the globe photographing buskers at various festivals and street corners for an upcoming book he's working on. Many of you have been photographed by him. He's still working on the book, (in Europe right now) but while we're waiting for it, he sent me a nice bunch of images to post here as a sample of what's to be in the book.

    Check out the gallery here:

Feel free to post comments and questions here in this thread. Daniel will be monitoring it and will be able to answer things in more detail than I can.

    Enjoy!

Here are a few words from Daniel...

          Hello,
I am a photographer based in the Central Coast of California, and decided in late 2000 to put together a photographic based book on the current state of Street Performance. During the next 4 years I traveled to over 26 cities in 14 countries shooting over 35000 images of Street Perfomers.During that time I was able to meet and get to know a number of you and festival producers and want to thank you again for helping me out in this project. Some of you I met in many locations, and I think I photographed Al Millar in at least 4 counties.Hopefully all of you that I photographed received some 4x6 prints,as I either sent them directly to you__or _through another person(festival producer,SP,or site manager).

The working title of the book is "A Circus on Main Street-The Art of Street Performance". I have developed a 4 page detailed outline which has been reviewed by 5-6 Street Performers and festival producers.

The book will have between 800 and 1000 images and will cover from gathering an audience to busking. It will include as many different SP's as possible and cover all of the various types of SP that I have been privelaged to observe and photograph. The book will be in colour. Dick Finkel has tentatively agreed to co-author the book(actually already written a couple of pages),as his knowledge about SP is far greater than mine, and his writing skills vastly superior(my style is dull/factual,and his is humorous). The goals of this book are numerous, but basically the intent is to provide a visual form of entertainment to the entire family, and to raise the level of positive awareness of your performance art form.

My initial schedule for publication has been delayed twice for many reasons-all being mine(moved, got married, rebuilt my digital darkroom, busy with other photographic assignments and exhibit schedule).

The current status of the book,is that about 40% of the selected images are now scanned, corrected, cropped, etc. It takes about an hour for each image,so I have another 600 man hours to complete the scanning. Then I have to index/lable/document each image, and then write the text. With the current exhibit schedule(12/04 and 6/05 with a possible 2 more),I would guess that it will be 6 -9 months before all images are scanned and documented.I will update this page with periodic progress reports.

I have also posted recently posted 46 images which will be in the book. You can get a good feeling from these as to_the style of photography which will be used_for this book Some of these images I have already enlarged to 12x18,and some maybe included in one or two of my upcoming one-man exhibits. If any of you know of a good studio/exhibit hall(where their commisions are reasonable)_anywhere in the world that would want a dedicated SP image exhibit, please contact me.

I will be in Lithuania in 2 weeks to shoot a folk festival, have a delayed honeymoon,_and to complete a project(forhtcoming exhibit) on architecture in the Batlic States. I am hoping also to image some local street musicians. They have some very competent musicians in Estonia and Latvia(home made instruments/one man bands),and I am hoping that is the same in Vilnius.

Please contact me if you have any questions on the book or the images posted. I am also going to include a pitch directory in the book,so if any of you have any information on stable_pitch locations please send them to me. I am especially interested in pitch locations in South America,Korea, and Japan.

          Best Regards.

                Hello All,
I am now about 80% done with scanning. My local exhibit was delayed until July. I probably won't exhibit any SP images at this exhibit,as this particular building is used for wedding receptions during this month.(Not every wedding couple wants to look at a guy hanging upside down in chains and a straight jacket while exchanging wedding vows.It might give some women to many new ideas---). I may, however,be presenting the SP portfolio to a group of museum curators/magazine publishers/book publishers/art studio owners/etc. at a private review in July in Santa Fe,New Mexico. I also maybe discussing doing a photographic based article for 2 well know magazines. I won't know about all of this until the end of the second week of March.

I will keep you all posted.

                Dan
