not sure. any suggestions? do you think having hi-tech gear would definitely stop people from throwing coins?

        Hi tech gear

Perhaps it would dissuade them from throwing coins and would move them on up to ten dollar bills.

You know what would be kinda cool, is to while you are mixing scratch a voice or mix a voice into the beat telling people that you are awawawerking for tips. this might make people laugh and it's your way to let them know that you appreciate them.

for sure. well, i don';t actually do turntables, its more samples/drum machines/ microphone wearing a chicken mask and a boiler suit. but i could do that.
so has anyone seen any buskers doing turntables or samples or the like?

Presumably you have an independant power source.
Japan, Ueno park, Tokyo, you'll probably get shut down by cops or gangsters but they'll not harm you and you could get good footage.
Hippest place is Harajuku, they may not shut the streets down in the weekend any more, I seem to remember hearing that stopped. Space is a premium.
I'd recommend guerrilla spots, set up quick, do your stuff and have someone creative filming. It's potentially bigger than the moment if you get footage.
There's a park up omoto-dory in Harajuku, hit it in the weekends. But good street footage with people adopting your groove and moving IMO is gold.
You can use it to say, "I was big in Japan"
                Good luck.

back in 2000, when I was living in San Francisco I used to see this guy mixing live on his laptop, with an amp, on the street.
