A Therapeutic Clown Apprentice with Dr Clown, Toronto
Description of the work of a Dr Clown clown:
Dr Clown works with paediatric, adult and geriatric populations in healthcare settings. Our mission is to help alleviate stress and isolation associated with illness and institutionalization. Through improvised creative interaction using music, touch, slapstick, dance, and humour, we help restore a sense of power, dignity and hope to those ill and suffering.
We are looking for artists who:
o are ready to invest themselves in this kind of work on a long-term, part-time basis
o have professional training in performance (theatre, movement, dance, circus, music, improvisation etc).
o have some experience and training in theatrical clown work
o have a developed clown persona
o have experience in helping people (community work, volunteering etc.)
o have exceptional communication, relational and reflective skills
The person hired will begin as a Replacement Clown, working on an occasional basis for approximately 6 months with a view to a more permanent, part-time position as it becomes available. This position will be paid.
The work demands:
-Constant work in improvisation with various partners requiring flexibility, openness and an ability to adapt.
-Working in a hospital/rehabilitation environment and/or in a seniors’ facility where:
a) There are regulations and protocols around hygiene, confidentiality, etc
b) Illness, sadness, pain and death are common realities
-Adherence to hospital requirements (police check, vaccinations, etc) as well as the code of ethics of Dr Clown and the policy of not coming to work when sick.
-Accepting to work as an apprentice for an indefinite period and to be periodically observed by the psychosocial and artistic management team.
-Attending initial training sessions followed by regular, Continuing Professional Development sessions
Artists are hired to work in the spirit of authenticity and to be a supportive presence wherever they go. We are seeking artists who embrace this approach and apply it to all areas of their work including professional development and their relationship with their clown partners and those they encounter in each establishment.
