Circus Day Foundation/ Circus Harmony Seeks Teaching Artist
Position Summary:
Come help us teach the art of life through circus education. St, Louis, Missouri’s only circus school and social circus program is seeking a unique individual to add to their staff. We have a strong social circus mission that includes a code of ethics for students and teachers. Teachers are considered role models to the students and ambassadors to the community. We teach over 1300 students a year in both single and semester-long classes. In addition to our on-site location, we present outreach classes in a number of off-site locations. In some cases, our teachers are the most reliable adult in our students’ lives. This is not just a job. It is a commitment to becoming part of a family that helps children “defy gravity, soar with confidence and leap over social barriers, all at the same time.” We are seeking a teacher who can teach a wide variety of circus arts and is also able to choreograph acts and shows with our students. Students range in age from 5 to 81 years old, although most are children. Currently, for us to provide a full 40 hour work week, candidate will need to also perform administrative duties and/or perform.
Responsibilities:
• Teach beginner, intermediate and advanced circus arts classes for children and adults of different abilities and backgrounds
• Help students develop their own acts
• Choreograph student shows
• Keep circus classroom, storage areas and costumes clean and organized
• Teach life skills such as persistence, focus and teamwork through circus arts
• Uphold and model a code of ethics
• Help students maintain circus skill log books
• Track results of developed logic models to prove program effectiveness
• Ideal candidate needs to be able to handle administrative duties and/or perform
>Admin skills include computer proficiency in Word, Excel, Access and graphics programs (experience creating newsletters and programs a plus)
>Performing requires 20 – 30 minute solo show that can be presented in the round (strolling skills--- juggling, stilt-walking, magic, etc--- a plus)
Qualifications:
Must be qualified to teach at least three of the following genres up to advanced level:
Acrobatics, Aerials, Equilibristics, Object Manipulation and Clowning
• Acrobatics: forward rolls through twisting somersaults plus partner acrobatics and pyramids
• Aerials: static trapeze, lyra, Spanish Web, cloud swing, fabric, double and triple trapeze
• Equilibristics: rolla bolla, rolling globe, unicycle, tight wire, slack wire, free standing ladder
• Object Manipulation: toss juggling, contact juggling, diabolo, devil sticks plate spinning, hat manipulations, etc.
• Clowning and character development as well as prop construction and make-up
• In addition: Magic--- sleight of hand and big illusions--- a plus
