    my turn

Hey, everybody. Here's the current version of my bio, which tells just about all.

Brian Foley is serious about his idiocy.

For the last decade, Brian has been performing what he calls "Interactive Variety" for theatrical events, outdoor festivals and private parties. Specializing in mixing contemporary and historic performance arts, his performances evoke the spectacular theatricality of the past while creating a timeless appeal. A devoted student of the history of variety performance, inspiration has been drawn from circus, Commedia Dell'Arte, sideshow, melodrama, busking, and modern theater and dance.

Brian's original work has seen the form of solo clown shows, Commedia Dell'Arte scenarios, Wild West Medicine Shows, grand illusion and close-up magic, and his pride and joy, Circo Zanni, a period-specific street circus production. He's also done a bit of modern puppetry, carnival geek, stunt shows and costume character work, as Barney the Purple Dinosaur, a Power Ranger, and numerous others. This winter he began an association with The Walrus Factory, scripting instructional videos for children to teach them about the variety arts.

You may have seen Brian at The Barnum Festival, Celtic Classic, Hotel Hershey, The Pyramid Club, The Great American Melodrama, The Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Grubb Mansion, Coney Island, Madison Square Garden, or the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, with whom Brian has had an artistic association since 1998. Brian has appeared on NBC's Today Show, Food Channel's Best Of..., Fox and Friends, WABC 7 New York, and across the country at more 'Palace' Theaters than he'd care to count.

Brian studied Shakespeare, Commedia Dell'Arte and Puppetry (among other things) at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. He has also assistant-taught clown at this illustrious institution. Over the years, Brian has supplemented his university training by studying clown, circus arts, magic, and stage combat with numerous master teachers and luminaries of the profession.

Brian's list of skills is nearly longer than his six-foot frame: magic of all shapes and sizes; juggling--balls, rings, clubs, knives, torches, hats, cats (don't ask); puppetry and ventriloquism; mime; improv comedy; fire eating; stilt-walking; stage combat--unarmed, rapier, staff, broadsword; basic circus acrobatics--human statues, tumbling; ukulele, piano and barbershop harmony are only a few of his extensive musical skills; tap and modern dance; and to top it all off, he's an excellent chef.

So that's the bio...basically, I'm a twenty-five yr. old in NYC with a degree in theater directing from NYU who is much happier being a clown than anything else. I have a surprisingly beautiful girlfriend whom I adore, and don't cheat on too much, and I think the only thing that's held me back in my career is the support of my family and friends.
I had the pleasure of meeting a bunch of you folks at Motionfest last year, and if the fates allow, I shall return.
